How to Apply

We have a simple 3 step process to apply for a position with the Department of State Hospitals as a Police Officer.

Step 1: Get a CalCareers Account

You need to create a CalCareers account so that we can guide you through the rest of the process. Once you have a account created you can move on to step 2.

Step 2: Register and Take the Exam

Now that you have created a CalCareers account, It's time to register for the exam. Registration only takes a few minutes. The Exam is 100% online.

Step 3: Apply

Once you have registered for the exam we will guide you through the rest of the process via email. Make sure that you check your junk mail. Future notifications will come from recruit@dsh.ca.gov. After you pass, we will send you an email to choose your location.

Starting pay is $42,203 per year ($20.29/hr)
With current $4/hr add-on, starting pay is $50,523 ($24.29/hr)
Maximum security sites receive an additional $2/hr add-on, starting pay of $54,683 ($26.29/hr)
Sites with higher vacancy rates receive an additional $5/hr add-on, starting pay of $60,923 ($29.29/hr)
Maximum security sites with higher vacancy rates receive the $2/hr and $5/hr add-on, starting pay of $65,083 ($31.29/hr)

Become a Youth Counselor

Wisconsin Department of Corrections is currently hiring Youth Counselors at Lincoln Hills School/Copper Lake School, located in northern Wisconsin near the cities of Merrill, Tomahawk, Wausau and Rhinelander. Youth Counselors use cutting-edge research and evidence-based approaches to implement lasting change with a positive impact for the youth of Wisconsin.

STARTING PAY UP TO $30.89 PER HOUR
This position is in pay schedule/range 05-31 with starting base pay of$19.89/hour, plus a $4/hour add-on and an additional $2/hour add-on ($25.89 total). Employees are also eligible for an additional, temporary $5/hour add-on. Differential pay is available for certain night and weekend shifts.

Candidates who are new to State service or who have not held any position with the State in the last five years may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of $2,000.
